Introduction
This privacy policy describes how CogScroll (com.stuartbradley.cogscroll), developed by Stuart Bradley, handles your data.
Information We Collect
CogScroll does not collect any personal information, and we operate no server that could receive it.
The app stores the following data locally on your device to provide its functionality:
- Your game results and scores, and the per-domain progress derived from them
- App settings and preferences (such as your daily-reminder time)
- A trial-start timestamp, used to track your 28-day free trial on-device
This data is stored in a local database and local preferences on your device. The app itself never transmits it to the developer or any server we operate. If you have device backups enabled, your device's operating system may include a copy in your personal Google account — see Device Backups below.
Information We Do Not Collect
CogScroll does not access, collect, or process any of the following:
- Personal identification information (name, email, phone number)
- Account credentials or sign-in data
- Location data
- Usage analytics or behavioural tracking
- Crash reports or diagnostic data
- Advertising or device identifiers
- Cookies or web tracking technologies
- Contacts, photos, or other device data
How Your Data Is Used
Data stored locally on your device is used solely to provide app functionality:
- Showing your scores and your per-domain progress over time
- Choosing each day's adaptive practice set
- Triggering an optional local notification reminder
- Determining whether your free trial is still active
Your data is never used for advertising, profiling, or analytics of any kind.
Purchases (Google Play Billing)
CogScroll is free for a 28-day trial, after which a single one-time £4 purchase (cogscroll_lifetime_unlock) unlocks the app permanently — there is no subscription.
This purchase is processed entirely by Google Play Billing. We never see or receive your payment details, and we operate no server that verifies or records purchases. Your entitlement (whether you have unlocked the app) is managed by Google Play and restored automatically when you reinstall or set up a new device. Google's handling of your purchase is governed by Google's own privacy policy.
Data Sharing
CogScroll does not share any data with third parties.
The app contains no third-party SDKs that collect data, no advertising networks, and no analytics services.
The only circumstances in which your data leaves your device are: (1) your operating system's own backup feature, described in Device Backups below; and (2) Google Play Billing for the one-time unlock, described in Purchases above. Both are operated by Google and controlled by you and your device platform — not by the app.
CogScroll includes an export/import feature that lets you save or load your data as a backup file. This operates entirely under your control using your device's local file system and share sheet; any file you choose to share goes only where you send it, never to the developer.
Device Backups
CogScroll works with Android's built-in backup system, Android Auto Backup. If you have device backups enabled in your system settings, your operating system may automatically include a snapshot of your CogScroll data — your scores, progress, settings, and trial state — in your personal Google account (your Google Drive).
A few things to know about device backups:
- Its purpose is to let you restore your data if you reinstall the app or set up a new device.
- It is provided and controlled by Android. Your backed-up data is handled in accordance with Google's privacy policy.
- No separate account or sign-in is required within CogScroll — the backup uses the Google account already configured on your device.
- You can disable it at any time under Settings → Google → Backup (or Settings → System → Backup), plus per-app backup controls where available.
Data Security
Your data is stored locally on your device and is protected by your device's built-in security measures, including lock screen protection and device encryption.
The app itself does not transmit your data over any network. If you have device backups enabled, the transfer and encryption of your backup to your personal Google account is handled by your operating system and Google, in accordance with their security practices.
Data Retention and Deletion
Your data remains on your device until you choose to remove it. You can delete your data at any time by:
- Using "Redo baseline" in the app, which erases your stored analytics
- Clearing app data through your device's system settings
- Uninstalling the app, which permanently removes all data stored on your device
- Disabling device backups and/or deleting the app's backup from your Google account (Google Drive)
Please note: if you have device backups enabled, a copy of your data may remain in your personal Google account after you uninstall the app, until it is removed under Google's retention rules or deleted manually through your Google account settings. There is no server-side data held by the developer to request the deletion of, because the developer holds none.
App Permissions
CogScroll requests the following Android permissions, none of which are used to collect or transmit data to the developer:
- Notifications — to display the optional daily reminder you can turn on in Settings
- Run at startup — to reschedule your reminder after your device restarts
- Internet — used only by Google Play Billing for the one-time unlock; the app makes no network calls of its own that send your data anywhere
Device backup (see Device Backups above) does not require an app permission; it is a feature of Android and is controlled in your system settings.
Children's Privacy
CogScroll is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app does not collect personal information from any user. If you believe your child has provided personal information through this app, please contact us — though no mechanism exists within the app to do so.
Changes to This Policy
If this privacy policy is updated, the revised version will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Your continued use of CogScroll after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
